How to Store Research Peptides Correctly

Storage temperature, light exposure, and reconstitution all affect peptide stability. Here is how to keep lyophilized and reconstituted research peptides viable.

Peptide degradation is one of the most common sources of inconsistent results in the lab. A vial that was handled poorly during shipping or storage can lose potency long before its printed shelf life, and the loss is invisible to the naked eye. Correct storage is the cheapest form of quality control available to a research team.

Lyophilized (powder) storage

In lyophilized form, most research peptides are remarkably stable. Kept sealed, dry, and away from light, a powdered vial generally retains its integrity far longer than the same peptide in solution.

  • Short term (weeks): a stable, cool location out of direct sunlight is generally sufficient.
  • Long term (months to years): freezer storage at -4°F or colder is the standard practice.
  • Keep vials sealed until use, moisture is the primary enemy of lyophilized powder.
  • Allow a cold vial to reach room temperature before opening to avoid condensation inside the vial.

Reconstituted (solution) storage

Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, the clock speeds up considerably. Peptides in solution are susceptible to hydrolysis, oxidation, and microbial contamination.

  • Refrigerate reconstituted vials at 35-46°F.
  • Protect from light, keep vials in their carton or an opaque container.
  • Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles; each cycle can measurably reduce peptide integrity.
  • Label the vial with the reconstitution date so shelf life is tracked, not guessed.

Shipping and receiving

Lyophilized peptides tolerate ambient shipping temperatures for the short transit windows typical of domestic delivery. What matters most is what happens after the package arrives: unpack promptly, inspect the vial seal and cake appearance, and move the product into its intended storage condition the same day.

Documentation matters

Pair good storage with good records. Log the lot number, receipt date, storage condition, reconstitution date, and diluent used. When results drift, that log is usually the fastest way to find out why.
