Research details

Areas of research interest

Tesamorelin is studied for reducing visceral (deep abdominal) fat, especially in HIV-associated lipodystrophy, and for related metabolic and liver-fat outcomes. Tesamorelin is the active ingredient in an FDA-approved prescription medicine. This research-grade material is not that product and is not for human use.

Overview

Tesamorelin is a stabilized synthetic analogue of the full 44-amino-acid growth hormone-releasing hormone, GHRH(1-44). It stimulates the pituitary to release growth hormone, which in turn raises IGF-1.

Research summary

Visceral fat. In a 26-week trial of 412 HIV patients with abdominal fat accumulation, tesamorelin reduced visceral fat by 15.2%, while placebo patients gained about 5% [1]. Triglycerides and the total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio also improved [1].

IGF-1 and safety. IGF-1 rose 81% with tesamorelin and fell 5% with placebo [1]. Overall adverse events did not differ significantly between groups, though more tesamorelin patients withdrew because of an adverse event [1].

Regulatory status. FDA approved tesamorelin in 2010 for reducing excess abdominal fat in HIV-infected patients with lipodystrophy.
