Research details
Areas of research interest
Thymosin alpha-1 is studied for immune modulation, with the most clinical work in chronic viral hepatitis. Other research areas include sepsis, fungal infections after bone marrow transplant, and use as a vaccine response enhancer. Its synthetic form, thymalfasin, is approved in more than 35 countries but not by FDA. This research-grade material is not an approved product and is not for human use.
Overview
Thymosin alpha-1 is a 28-amino-acid peptide first isolated in 1977 from a bovine thymus preparation called thymosin fraction 5 [1]. It is a fragment of the larger protein prothymosin alpha. Thymalfasin is its synthetic equivalent.
Research summary
Immune mechanisms. Thymalfasin induces interleukin-2 production, promotes differentiation of immature lymphocytes, increases B-cell growth factor production, and improves macrophage antigen presentation [1].
Clinical use outside the US. Thymalfasin is approved in more than 35 countries for hepatitis B and C and as an immune enhancer in several other conditions [1]. It has been used in clinical settings for decades, which gives it a larger human evidence base than most research peptides.
