Research details

Areas of research interest

Semax is studied for stroke recovery, cognitive function, and neuroprotection. In Russia it is on the national list of essential drugs and is used for stroke, transient ischemic attack, and cognitive disorders. Semax is not approved by FDA or any Western regulator.

Overview

Semax (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) is a synthetic heptapeptide based on a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone, ACTH(4-10). It keeps the ACTH(4-7) sequence and adds a stabilizing Pro-Gly-Pro tail, and it does not act as a hormone on the adrenal glands. Its exact mechanism of action is not established.

Research summary

Neurotrophic effects. In rats, Semax regulated expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor TrkB in the hippocampus [1].

Stroke. A Russian study of 110 patients recovering from ischemic stroke reported higher BDNF levels with Semax, which correlated with early rehabilitation progress.

Evidence base. Most Semax research comes from Russian groups, and large Western randomized trials have not been conducted.
