Areas of research interest
NAD+ is studied in aging, energy metabolism, and neurodegenerative disease research, because cellular NAD+ levels decline with age. Research on raising NAD+ includes both precursor molecules and direct administration of NAD+ itself. NAD+ in this form is not approved by FDA for any use.
Overview
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a coenzyme, not a peptide. It is required for roughly 500 enzymatic reactions and is one of the most abundant molecules in the human body [1]. It carries electrons in redox reactions and regulates NAD+-sensing enzymes involved in energy metabolism and cell survival [1].
Research summary
Aging. NAD+ levels decline steadily with age, which is associated with altered metabolism and greater disease susceptibility [1]. Restoring NAD+ in old or diseased animals has improved health measures and extended lifespan [1].
Direct administration. A pilot study in healthy men tracked NAD+ and its breakdown products during a 6-hour intravenous infusion [2]. NAD+ was rapidly and completely removed from plasma for at least the first 2 hours, and the metabolites pointed to enzymatic breakdown [2].
