Research details
Areas of research interest
MOTS-c is studied for insulin sensitivity, obesity, and age-related physical decline. Because its effects in mice resemble some effects of exercise, it is often described as an exercise-mimetic research peptide. MOTS-c is not approved by FDA for any use, and no human efficacy trials have been completed.
Overview
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA, within the 12S rRNA gene, rather than in the cell nucleus. It belongs to a small family of mitochondrial-derived peptides. Its main target tissue is skeletal muscle, where it inhibits the folate cycle and activates AMPK, a central regulator of cellular energy.
Research summary
Metabolism. In mice, MOTS-c treatment prevented both age-related and high-fat-diet-induced insulin resistance, as well as diet-induced obesity [1].
Exercise and aging. MOTS-c levels rise with exercise, and treating aged mice improved physical performance and muscle function [2].
