Areas of research interest
KPV is studied mainly for intestinal inflammation, especially in models of inflammatory bowel disease. A second, smaller research area covers inflammatory skin models. KPV is not approved by FDA for any use, and no controlled human trials have been completed.
Overview
KPV is the tripeptide Lys-Pro-Val, corresponding to the C-terminal amino acids (positions 11 to 13) of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). Because it is a tripeptide, it is a substrate for PepT1, the intestinal transporter that absorbs di- and tripeptides from digested protein.
Research summary
Cellular uptake. KPV enters intestinal epithelial and immune cells through the PepT1 transporter [1]. PepT1 is normally expressed in the small intestine and becomes induced in the colon during inflammatory bowel disease [1].
Colitis models. Oral KPV reduced the incidence of chemically induced colitis in two mouse models, with lower pro-inflammatory cytokine expression [1]. The effect is linked to reduced NF-κB inflammatory signaling inside the cells [1].
