Research details

Areas of research interest

Kisspeptin is studied in reproductive endocrinology, including fertility treatment, puberty, and reproductive hormone disorders. Newer research covers its role in sexual and emotional brain processing. Kisspeptin is not approved by FDA for any use.

Overview

Kisspeptins are a family of peptides produced from the KISS1 gene, including the longer kisspeptin-54 and the shorter kisspeptin-10. They act on the kisspeptin receptor in the hypothalamus, where they are a key upstream signal for the reproductive hormone axis. People with mutations that inactivate kisspeptin signaling are infertile [1].

Research summary

Fertility. In women with subfertility undergoing IVF, a single injection of kisspeptin-54 triggered egg maturation, with mature eggs increasing generally in a dose-dependent manner [1]. Fertilization and embryo transfer occurred in 92% of treated patients, and successful pregnancies followed [1].

Brain processing. In a study of 29 healthy young men, kisspeptin increased activity in limbic brain regions in response to sexual and couple-bonding images, and it reduced negative mood [2].
