Areas of research interest
Ipamorelin is studied as a selective stimulator of growth hormone release that acts through the ghrelin receptor. Its selectivity, meaning GH release without raising cortisol or other pituitary hormones, is the main reason for research interest. A separate line of research tested it for gut motility after surgery. Ipamorelin is not approved by FDA for any use.
Overview
Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide (Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH₂) derived from GHRP-1. It activates the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R1a), the same receptor targeted by the hormone ghrelin.
Research summary
Selectivity. In conscious swine, ipamorelin released GH with potency comparable to GHRP-6 [1]. Unlike earlier GH-releasing peptides, it did not raise ACTH or cortisol, even at doses 200 times above the effective dose for GH release [1].
Human pharmacology. In healthy male volunteers, ipamorelin produced dose-proportional GH release with predictable pharmacokinetics [2].
