Research details

Areas of research interest

Glutathione is studied as the body's main intracellular antioxidant, with research on oxidative stress, aging, and neurodegenerative disease, especially Parkinson's disease. Glutathione in this form is not approved by FDA for any use.

Overview

Glutathione is a tripeptide made of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It neutralizes reactive oxygen species and helps regenerate other antioxidants inside cells. Glutathione levels decline with age and in certain conditions, including Parkinson's disease.

Research summary

Parkinson's disease pilot. A randomized, double-blind pilot trial in 21 Parkinson's patients compared intravenous glutathione with placebo for four weeks [1]. Glutathione was well tolerated, but it did not produce a significant improvement in symptoms [1].

Meta-analysis. A 2020 meta-analysis pooled seven randomized trials of glutathione in Parkinson's disease, covering 450 participants [2]. The authors called for larger trials before its benefit can be confirmed.
