Areas of research interest
GHK-Cu is most often discussed in connection with skin regeneration, wound healing, and hair research, and it is a common ingredient in topical cosmetic products. Laboratory studies also cover lung, bone, liver, and stomach-lining repair. Injectable GHK-Cu is not approved by FDA for any use.
Overview
GHK-Cu is the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine bound to a copper ion. It occurs naturally in human plasma, can be released from tissue after injury, and was first isolated in 1973 [1].
Research summary
Tissue repair. In laboratory studies, GHK stimulated blood vessel and nerve outgrowth and increased collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycan synthesis [1]. Repair effects have been reported in skin, lung connective tissue, bone, liver, and stomach lining [1].
Gene expression. Analysis of gene-expression databases found GHK shifts the activity of a large share of human genes, increasing expression in 59% of affected genes and suppressing it in 41% [1]. These patterns have been proposed as an explanation for its broad range of reported effects [1].
Evidence base. The main review literature is authored by the researcher who first isolated GHK, and human data are concentrated in topical cosmetic use.
