Areas of research interest
Epitalon is studied in aging research, mainly for its reported effects on telomerase, the enzyme that maintains the protective ends of chromosomes. Other research areas include pineal gland function and circadian rhythm. Epitalon is not approved by FDA for any use.
Overview
Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) developed at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. It was identified as the proposed active component of epithalamin, an extract of bovine pineal gland.
Research summary
Telomerase. Added to cultured human fetal fibroblasts that normally lack telomerase, Epitalon induced expression of the enzyme's catalytic subunit, restored telomerase activity, and lengthened telomeres [1]. The authors proposed this reflects reactivation of the telomerase gene in somatic cells [1].
Evidence base. Most Epitalon research comes from the group that developed it, and the telomerase findings come from cell culture. Cell-culture effects do not establish that the same happens in living human tissue.
