Areas of research interest
DSIP is studied mainly in sleep research, along with stress response, pain, and neuroendocrine regulation. Early work proposed it as a natural sleep-promoting factor, but that hypothesis remains unresolved. DSIP is not approved by FDA for any use.
Overview
DSIP is a nonapeptide (Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu) first isolated from the blood of sleeping rabbits by a Swiss research group in the 1970s [1]. Its structure is unlike other known peptide families, and where the body produces it is still unknown.
Research summary
Original characterization. In a double-blind study of 58 rabbits, synthetic DSIP infused into the brain was the only one of nine related peptides to significantly enhance delta and spindle EEG patterns associated with deep sleep [1].
Human studies. Small clinical studies in the 1980s and 1990s tested DSIP in insomnia, including a double-blind study in chronic insomniac patients [2]. Results were mixed across studies.
Current view. A later review concluded that evidence for DSIP as a sleep factor is weak, and its natural occurrence and biological activity remain unclear [3].
