Areas of research interest
Cerebrolysin is studied for acute ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury, and dementia. It is approved in more than 50 countries, including Austria, Russia, and China, but it is not approved by FDA for any use. This research material is not for human use.
Overview
Cerebrolysin is not a single peptide. It is a mixture of low-molecular-weight peptides and amino acids derived from porcine (pig) brain, with proposed neuroprotective and neurotrophic properties [1]. It is widely used for stroke in Russia, Eastern Europe, China, and other Asian countries [1].
Research summary
Stroke (Cochrane review). A 2023 Cochrane review pooled seven randomized trials covering 1,773 patients with acute ischemic stroke [1]. It found moderate-certainty evidence that Cerebrolysin and similar brain-derived peptide mixtures probably do not prevent death from any cause [1]. The review also reported more non-fatal serious adverse events in treated patients.
Other research. Manufacturer-funded trials have reported small-to-moderate recovery effects in brain-injury populations. Independent reviews rate the overall evidence as low certainty.
