Research details

Areas of research interest

ARA-290 is studied mainly for small-fiber neuropathy and neuropathic pain, especially in sarcoidosis, with additional Phase 2 work in type 2 diabetes. Interest centers on whether it can regrow damaged small nerve fibers. ARA-290 is not approved by FDA for any use, and no Phase 3 trials have been run.

Overview

ARA-290 (cibinetide) is an 11-amino-acid peptide engineered from the structure of erythropoietin (EPO). It activates the innate repair receptor, which counters inflammation and supports tissue repair, without EPO's effect on red blood cell production.

Research summary

Pilot trial. A randomized, double-blind pilot in 22 sarcoidosis patients with small-fiber neuropathy symptoms reported improved neuropathic symptoms with no safety concerns [1].

Nerve fiber regrowth. In a placebo-controlled trial, 28 days of ARA-290 improved neuropathic symptoms and increased corneal small-nerve-fiber density in patients with sarcoidosis-associated nerve fiber loss [2]. Exercise capacity on a 6-minute walk test also improved [2].

Phase 2b. A 64-patient, 28-day randomized trial found ARA-290 significantly increased small nerve fiber abundance in both the cornea and the skin [3].
