Research details

Areas of research interest

5-Amino-1MQ is studied for obesity, fat metabolism, and insulin sensitivity, with newer work on muscle function in aging. It works by blocking an enzyme linked to fat storage and NAD+ metabolism. All published research is in animals and cells; it is not approved by FDA for any use.

Overview

5-Amino-1MQ (5-amino-1-methylquinolinium) is a small molecule, not a peptide. It selectively inhibits nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), an enzyme that is upregulated in the fat and liver tissue of obese mice.

Research summary

Obesity models. In diet-induced obese mice, 5-Amino-1MQ significantly reduced body weight, white fat mass, fat cell size, and total cholesterol [1]. Food intake did not change, and no adverse effects were observed [1]. The compound was highly selective and did not inhibit related enzymes in the NAD+ salvage pathway [1].

Metabolic follow-up. A later study in obese mice found dose-dependent limits on weight and fat gain, along with improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity [2].
